Nurturing the Shy Child,
Barbara Markway, Ph.D. & Gregory Markway Ph.D.

According to Markway and Markway, ’Roughly 10 to 15 percent of kids
in kindergarten through grade eight are very shy, and the percentage
of shy teens is the same as shy adults, roughly 40 %’.  When is shy
too shy?  Some kids are shy but feel secure in their own shoes.  Others
can be so painfully shy they experience physical discomfort and pain
too severe to speak in public or engage in new situations.  What can
parents do when they are worried about their shy child?

The authors of ‘Nurturing the Shy Child’ provide a very in-depth and
practical account of when shyness can become a problem that
interferes in the life of a child.  Shyness is normalized as a trait that
can be linked to the brain, chemicals in the body (neurotransmitters)
and temperament.  However, they also offer a spectrum on which to
consider a child’s shyness, from shy and secure all the way to mild and
severe anxiety disorders.  Beside this continuum, they describe a
range of problems that can exist in order for parents to better
understand their child’s specific situation.   Specific exercises and
questionnaires are provided to look more closely at whether a child
has a reserved nature that requires a little extra nudge to engage in
the outer world, or more difficult symptoms that actually inhibit their
ability to engage in social activities.

Parents need to also understand their own reactions to their child’s
behaviour.  Parents can explore if they are an outgoing parent or are a
more reserved parent and how their temperament influences parenting
a shy child.  This book gives in-depth exercises to help parents look
into their own expectations for their child and how these may impact
the child’s behaviour.

This book provides wonderful real-life examples and a range of helpful
strategies that parents can utilize in order to help their child break
through the shyness.  Markway and Markway offer a holistic approach
to the skills parents can use with their child, everything from learning
deep breathing, understanding thought processes to facing their fears
and building social skills.  The authors also provide helpful definitions
for the types of anxiety disorders common in children, including
selective mutism, school anxiety, and separation anxiety.  Overall, this
book is very informative and full of helpful examples, specific
worksheets and child-friendly tools.  I recommend reading this if you
are worried about how your child engages in the world or if you just
want tips for living with and nurturing a shy child.
